Learning programming via worked-examples: Relation of learning styles to cognitive load
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes an experiment that compared learners with contrasting learning styles, Active vs. Reflective, using three different strategies for learning programming via worked-examples: Pairedmethod, Structure-emphasising, and Completion. The quality of the learners’ acquired cognitive schemata was assessed in terms of their post-test performance. The experiment investigated variations in learners’ cognitive load, taking both the learning strategies and the learners’ learning styles into account. Overall, the results of the experiment were inconsistent. In comparing the effects of the strategies during the learning phase, the study found significant differences in cognitive load. Unexpectedly, no differences were then detected either in cognitive load or in performance during the post-test (post-test). In comparing the effects of the learning styles during the learning phase and the transfer phase, medium effect sizes suggested that learning style may have had an effect on cognitive load. However, no significant difference was observed in performance during the post-test. 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Comparing the Effect of Two Teaching Methods with Complete and Incomplete Worked Examples on Cognitive Load of Students in Medical Terminology
Introduction : Use of worked examples is one of the methods to decrease cognitive load and facilitate learning. There are different methods to provide worked examples. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of two teaching methods of complete and incomplete worked examples on students’ cognitive load in instruction of medical terminology. Methods : In a quasi-experimental study in ...
متن کاملSchema Acquisition: Implications for the Instructional Design of Examples
Students often use analogical reasoning to solve programming problems. The use of examples is one of three types of analogical reasoning in problem solving [1]. Research has shown that examples play an important role in learning and problem solving [2, 3] and are crucial to the acquisition of initial cognitive skills [4]. Schema acquisition is one of the underlying processes in acquiring such s...
متن کاملExploring Design Characteristics of Worked Examples to Support Programming and Algorithm Design
In this paper we present an iterative research process to integrate worked examples for introductory programming learning activities. Learning how to program involves many cognitive processes that may result in a high cognitive load. The use of worked examples has been described as a relevant approach to reduce student cognitive load in complex tasks. Learning materials were designed based on i...
متن کاملThe role of worked-examples in schema acquisition: Implications and preliminary findings
Research has shown that worked-examples play an important role in learning and problem solving and are crucial to cognitive skill acquisition. We propose to extend previous work on example-based learning systems with regard to the instructional design of the examples themselves. This can be done by drawing on current developments in Cognitive Load Theory. We aim to explore the roles that worked...
